Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Tolu Arokodare has been given psychological clearance by the club to feature in Friday’s English Premier League clash against Aston Villa, following recovery from the trauma of last weekend’s racist abuse.
The 25-year-old was subjected to online racist attacks after missing a first-half penalty in Wolves’ 1-0 away defeat to Crystal Palace.
Head coach Rob Edwards said both the coaching staff and teammates offered individual support and collectively rallied around Arokodare throughout the week.
“He was understandably upset and angered by the abuse,” Edwards told the club’s official website. “We’ve supported him through one-on-one conversations and as a group, and he’s also received overwhelming support from Wolves fans and others reaching out.”
Edwards confirmed that Arokodare trained fully this week and, despite being heavily affected psychologically, is ready to feature in Wolves’ home fixture against Aston Villa on Friday.
The head coach also noted that football authorities have been closely monitoring the situation amid growing concerns over online discrimination in the league.
Arokodare joined Wolves last summer from Belgian side KRC Genk, scoring twice in 18 appearances for the club.
