FG URGES YOUTHS TO USE SOCIAL MEDIA PRODUCTIVELY

The Federal Government has urged youths to harness the array of opportunities in the social media for self empowerment.

The Technical Adviser to the Vice President on Women, Youth Engagement and Impact, Hajia Hauwa Liman, made the call at a youth summit in Uyo on Saturday.

Speaking at the summit with the theme: “Leveraging Opportunities: Building a Future-Ready Youth” Liman urged youths to indulge in acts that would make them to be self-reliant.

The vice president’s aide said that the duty of the government was to provide the enabling environment for productivity, saying, “as youths, our future is in our hands”

”There are opportunities locally and globally, it is left for us to tap into them in productive ways, we can achieve any goal we set to pursue.

”We are in social media age, I urge you to use the social media to develop yourselves. The opportunities in the social media are vast.

“You don’t need a Godfather to invest in yourself. Be deliberate about self-development
“When you invest in yourself, opportunities will open,” she said.

In a keynote address, Prof. Akpan Ekpo of the University of Uyo, urged governments at all levels to create a framework that would build future-ready youths.

Ekpo, a Professor of Economics and Public Policy, urged the Federal Government to rework the national education curriculum to reflect industry realities and global trends.

He said that for any nation to achieve sustainable growth and development, the youth should be seen as strategic partners and change agents.

“I must tell the youths that the future would not be handed down to the them on a gold platter, you have to work out your future through productive ventures,” he said.

In his remarks, Dr Ekerete Ekanem, the Commissioner for Youth Development, urged the youth to acquire relevant skills, and develop themselves in order to tap into opportunities that would earn them great future.

Ekanem said that by investing in young people, the government was investing in the future of the society.

In her open remarks, the Chairman on the event, Prof. Comfort Ekpo, urged the youth to make use of the opportunity provided by the summit to make seminal decisions about life.

Ekpo said that procrastination could make one to miss life-changing opportunities, adding that poverty thrived when people ignore opportunities.

NAN reports that the highpoint of the summit was a raffle draw for free business registration for 20 persons, and tuition-only scholarship for four students in tertiary institutions.
