Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, has dismissed claims that she is contesting the Ogun governorship race only to step aside for another aspirant.

She said she is fully committed to the race and ready to deploy all legitimate political strategies to secure the governorship ticket of the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Obasanjo made this known during a media interaction with journalists on Saturday at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta.

Iyabo Obasanjo has said Ogun State is well positioned to make history by producing Nigeria’s first elected female governor in 2027.

She also dismissed claims that she is disconnected from the grassroots, insisting that her strongest political support comes from her close ties with local communities. Recalling her previous Senate campaign, Obasanjo said she personally visited even the most remote areas across her district.

“So, I’m coming out, using my effort and doing consultations all around the state, only for me not to compete? I don’t understand that. It’s not possible,” she said.

“I will compete with everyone in the field, and I will do everything within my power to secure the party ticket. I’ll carry out consultations and take all necessary steps.

“When I campaigned for the Senate, there was hardly any remote village in the Ogun Central Senatorial District that I did not visit. If you go to those communities and ask who has been there before, my name will be among the few mentioned.

“So when people say I’m not connected to the grassroots, I believe the grassroots is actually where my strength lies as a politician,” she added.

Responding to questions about her long absence from active politics and her return, Obasanjo explained that her time abroad exposed her to how governance works in other societies, particularly at the municipal level and in taxation systems.

She further clarified that having built a career before entering politics allows her to view public service primarily as an opportunity to drive development, rather than as a lifelong occupation.
