The Burkina Faso Football Federation has announced the appointment of Amir Abdou as the new head coach of the Stallions, describing the move as the beginning of a new phase marked by structure, ambition and renewed competitive focus.

The federation said the appointment of the 53-year-old Franco-Comorian followed what it described as a rigorous and highly competitive selection process.

Abdou takes over from Brama Traore, whose tenure came to an end after Burkina Faso’s early exit from the Africa Cup of Nations held in Morocco, a campaign that sparked internal review within the federation.

Confirming the decision, the FBF emphasized that the process reflected its commitment to repositioning the national team for improved performance in future competitions.

Our correspondent on Monday obtained the information from the CAF website in a statement dated Sunday, March 1, 2026.

The statement read: “Following a call for applications and a rigorous evaluation of the various profiles received, Comorian coach Amir Abdou has been officially appointed to lead Burkina Faso’s senior national team.”

Abdou’s appointment is widely seen as a strategic reset for a national side that has earned respect across the continent but continues to seek consistent and lasting impact at major international tournaments.

His immediate focus, according to the federation, will be on stabilising the team’s performances ahead of the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, as well as navigating the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers, where consistency is expected to be crucial.

Abdou’s record

The newly appointed Stallions coach, Amir Abdou, arrives with a pedigree built on continental competition.

He first rose to prominence with the Comoros national football team, leading the island nation to the knockout stage of the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in their history in 2021—an achievement that significantly altered perceptions of Comorian football on the continent.

He later sustained that upward trajectory with the Mauritania national football team, where he recorded a historic victory over Algeria national football team at the Africa Cup of Nations 2023, further cementing his reputation as a tactically disciplined coach capable of maximising squad performance.

At club level, Amir Abdou won two Mauritanian league titles with FC Nouadhibou before his most recent stint in Morocco’s top flight with Hassania Agadir.

Renowned for building compact defensive structures and promoting strong collective cohesion, Abdou now takes charge of a Burkina Faso team that combines experienced internationals with emerging talents.

His philosophy—anchored in organisation, unity and tactical clarity—is expected to underpin the federation’s broader rebuilding and long-term development strategy.

Burkina Faso’s standing on the continental stage remains notable, with the Stallions reaching the Africa Cup of Nations 2013 final and progressing to the semi-finals in Africa Cup of Nations 2017 and Africa Cup of Nations 2021.

However, a period of inconsistency—highlighted by an early exit at the most recent edition—has heightened calls for greater stability and sustained competitiveness.

Amir Abdou is expected to take charge of his first matches during the March 2026 international window, with opponents yet to be announced. With World Cup qualifiers approaching and preparations for upcoming continental competitions already in motion, the demand for immediate impact is clear.

For the federation, the appointment reflects confidence in experience and proven continental leadership. For Abdou, it presents an opportunity to steer a nation with an established football pedigree back into contention for major honours.
