The United Kingdom has confirmed that it will not participate in offensive strikes against Iran, emphasizing that it will maintain defensive operations in the region.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer made the announcement on Monday in response to escalating tensions between the United States and Iran following the death of Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Starmer described Iran’s retaliatory actions as a growing threat to people, regional interests, and allied nations.
He noted that Iran has carried out widespread attacks across the region, launching hundreds of missiles and thousands of drones at countries that have not provoked them.
“We will not join offensive strikes against Iran. Instead, we will continue defensive measures in the region,” Starmer said.
“With some 300,000 British citizens in the area, we are taking protective action. Our Cyprus bases are not being used by US bombers, and the RAF Akrotiri strike was not linked to any UK decision. Clearly, the Supreme Leader’s death has not curtailed Iran’s strikes, which are increasingly reckless and pose serious risks to civilians,” he added.
