Nigerian centre-back Chibuike Nwaiwu is set for a spell on the sidelines after Trabzonspor confirmed on Monday that he suffered a thigh injury during Friday’s 3-1 Super Lig win over Fatih Karagumruk, putting his chances of a maiden Super Eagles call-up in doubt, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The club revealed that an MRI scan showed bleeding and edema in the inner thigh muscles of Nwaiwu’s left leg. While no return date has been announced, the 22-year-old has already begun treatment under the supervision of the club’s medical staff.

The setback is a bitter blow for Nwaiwu, who had delivered one of the standout performances of his young career in the same match, scoring twice shortly after the break to secure Trabzonspor’s victory. The defender, who joined from Wolfsberger AC during the January transfer window, had been in fine form, contributing three goals or assists in nine appearances since his arrival.

Nwaiwu had been widely tipped in local media as a strong contender for Super Eagles manager Eric Chelle’s squad for a four-nation invitational tournament later this month, though the injury now casts serious doubt on those prospects.

He was substituted for Mathias Løvik in the 73rd minute, having scored in the 47th and 50th minutes, with Paul Onuachu assisting his second goal.
