The Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Agency (LNSA) has declared itself strategically prepared to evolve into a state policing structure once the legal framework for State Police is enacted, according to its General Manager, Ifalade Oyekan.

Oyekan, recently reappointed for a second five-year term by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, stated that the LNSA, widely regarded as a pioneer of community policing in Nigeria, has been restructured from a reactive unit into a preventive, intelligence-driven security institution.

“The LNSA is strategically structured to evolve into a state security apparatus once the enabling law is in place,” he said, noting that the agency now operates on a proactive, technology-backed, and intelligence-led model across Lagos.

He added that the agency’s evolution reflects the state government’s commitment to strengthening grassroots security architecture, emphasizing that officers are trained to anticipate, prevent, and mitigate security threats before they occur.

The statement comes amid renewed national discussions on state policing. Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu recently inaugurated an eight-member committee to oversee the implementation framework for state police, stressing that the proposed system would complement, not replace, the Nigeria Police Force within a coordinated national security structure.

State policing has been a long-standing advocacy of President Bola Tinubu, who championed decentralised security during his tenure as Lagos governor.

Oyekan affirmed that under the current administration, the LNSA and its Corps arm are being positioned as a modern, efficient, and responsive safety institution, ready to integrate seamlessly into the formal state police framework once the law is enacted.
