Arsenal took a crucial step towards ending their 20-year league title drought as Bukayo Saka scored a deflected first-half goal to secure a 1-0 win against Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium on Wednesday.

Saka, 24, celebrated becoming the fourth youngest player to reach 300 appearances for Arsenal with the decisive strike, which deflected off Carlos Baleba and slipped past Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen in the ninth minute. It was Saka’s second goal in his last 19 appearances across all competitions.

Despite being underwhelming at times, Arsenal’s defensive resilience and work ethic enabled them to withstand Brighton’s pressure, opening a seven-point gap over second-placed Manchester City. City’s surprise 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest at the Etihad Stadium on the same night left the Gunners in control of the title race.

Although City have a game in hand and will host Arsenal in April, the Gunners have reeled off three consecutive league victories, demonstrating their ability to cope with the pressures of the title chase.

Arsenal keeper David Raya narrowly avoided gifting Brighton an early goal inside the first three minutes with a misplaced pass to Baleba, whose lob was cleared by Gabriel Magalhaes. That scare spurred the Gunners into action, leading to Saka’s fortuitous opener.

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler expressed frustration over Arsenal’s slow set-piece routines, prompting a brief touchline confrontation with manager Mikel Arteta. Arsenal have drawn criticism for their reliance on dead-ball situations this season, having scored 16 goals from corners, equaling the Premier League single-season record. Arteta, however, defended the approach, describing previous wins as “beautiful” despite their pragmatic nature.

Brighton applied significant pressure in the second half, with Georginio Rutter, Yankuba Minteh, and Jack Hinshelwood coming close to leveling, but Arsenal dug deep to preserve the win. The Gunners were without defender William Saliba due to an ankle injury but showed composure to hold off the hosts.

The victory keeps Arsenal on course for a first English league crown since 2004, as they continue to juggle a push for the Premier League, Champions League last 16, League Cup final, and the FA Cup fifth round.
