The Federal Executive Council has approved the implementation of a Geographic Information System-enabled alphanumeric digital postcode system aimed at improving Nigeria’s addressing and logistics framework.

The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, disclosed this on Wednesday, noting that the approval was granted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the Federal Executive Council meeting.

Tijani explained that the project, developed in collaboration with the Postmaster General of the Federation and Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Postal Service, Tola Odeyemi, will introduce a modern geospatial addressing system designed to enhance accuracy and efficiency in mail and parcel delivery nationwide.

According to the minister, the digital postcode system will enable faster and more reliable processing of postal services while also supporting national development initiatives.

“Beyond strengthening postal operations, the Digital Postcode System will also serve as an important national enabler supporting better national planning, improved emergency response, more efficient logistics and e-commerce, and the delivery of government services,” Tijani stated on his X account.

He added that as Nigeria’s digital economy continues to expand, foundational infrastructure such as a modern addressing system will play a critical role in connecting people, businesses, and services across the country.

Similarly, Odeyemi described the initiative as more than a postal reform, noting that the system would serve as a critical national infrastructure for several sectors.

“It is a critical national infrastructure that enables e-commerce, logistics, emergency services, financial inclusion, security, urban planning, and effective public service delivery,” she said.

According to her, the introduction of an alphanumeric addressing framework will enable precise identification of locations across cities, towns, and rural communities, improving the delivery of goods, services, and digital platforms nationwide.

She added that the initiative reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s digital infrastructure and unlocking new opportunities for innovation and economic growth.

Odeyemi also highlighted recent improvements in the operations of the Nigerian Postal Service, noting that the agency generated over ₦10 billion in revenue in 2025 after digitising key processes and blocking revenue leakages.

Speaking during an appearance on The Beam on Channels Television, she said the reforms signal a renewed relevance for the postal agency in Nigeria’s evolving digital economy.

She expressed optimism that ongoing reforms would reposition NIPOST as a trusted and reliable institution capable of supporting the country’s digital transformation and national development.
