COMMUNITIES MUST TAKE OWNERSHIP OF FIGHT AGAINST TERRORISM- OLUFEMI OLUYEDE

Olufemi Oluyede, the chief of defence staff (CDS), has called on people living in Borno and Yobe states to take responsibility for fighting terrorism.
Zagazola Makama, a magazine that focuses on counter–insurgency efforts in the Lake Chad area, reported that Oluyede made this statement after a high–level security meeting in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state.
The magazine said the CDS mentioned that the insurgency in the north–east is still ongoing, partly because some people involved in the violence are hiding within the communities they are affecting.

The meeting, which lasted about four hours, included top military leaders like Waidi Shuaibu, the chief of army staff (COAS); Abdulsalam Abubakar, the theatre commander for Operation Hadin Kai; and other high–ranking officials.
Oluyede said intelligence reports show that many of the people behind attacks over the last 15 years come from the same communities that have been hit hardest by violence.
Makama noted that the defence chief gave an example from Kukawa, where soldiers found injured terrorists hiding in the community during a cleanup operation after an attack.
The CDS also talked about how insurgents are changing their methods, especially by using drones and other technology in their attacks.
He said the military is responding by using advanced drone systems to improve its ability to monitor, target, and coordinate during battles.
