The independent national electoral commission (inec) has held a meeting with political party leaders at its headquarters in abuja to present and discuss new electoral guidelines in preparation for the 2027 general elections.

Attending the meeting are chairmen, secretaries, and representatives of various political parties.

among those present are senator nenadi usman representing the labour party, while abdulrahman mohammed and samuel anyanwu are representing the peoples democratic party (pdp).

the meeting centers on the presentation and discussion of newly drafted electoral guidelines meant to regulate the conduct of the 2027 general elections.

The development comes after the passage of the electoral act 2026, which required a review of existing electoral procedures.

according to the inec chairman, the revised guidelines are in line with the provisions of the new law, stressing that political parties and stakeholders can no longer rely on outdated regulations within the changing electoral system.

as part of its preparations, inec has also announced plans for the continuous voter registration (cvr) exercise.

the process is set to begin with online pre-registration on 18 august 2025, followed by in-person registration on 25 august 2025, giving eligible nigerians the opportunity to register or update their voter details.

The commission has also unveiled plans for a nationwide voter register revalidation exercise aimed at eliminating duplicate entries and removing the names of deceased persons to improve the credibility of the electoral register.

discussions around electoral reforms are ongoing, especially concerning provisions in the electoral act amendment bill 2026, including the senate’s stance on real-time electronic transmission of results to inec’s result viewing (irev) portal.

political activities are also gaining momentum ahead of the elections. president bola tinubu has received endorsement from the all progressives congress (apc) for a second term, while opposition figures such as atiku abubakar, rotimi amaechi, and peter obi are considering a coalition under the african democratic congress (adc) to challenge the ruling party.
