PLATEAU GOVERNORSHIP ASPIRANT SET TO DEFECT TO ADC AFTER LEAVING APC

Barely two days after resigning from the all progressives congress, a former governorship aspirant in plateau state, brigadier general john sura (retd), has finalized plans to join the African democratic congress, where he is targeting the 2027 governorship ticket.

Sura, who hails from Panyam ward in Mangu local government area—the same council as governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang—had joined the APC only a year ago after leaving the peoples democratic party.

in a resignation letter dated march 21, 2026, and addressed to the APC chairman in Panyam ward, the retired general said his departure from the party takes immediate effect.

he also expressed appreciation to the party leadership for the opportunity and support he received during his short stay in the party.

Speaking with journalists in Jos on Tuesday, Sura said leadership failure informed his decision to leave the APC, stressing that plateau state needs a change in leadership in 2027 to address persistent insecurity and reposition the state’s economy.

“the APC-led administration has not done enough to tackle the security challenges facing the state.

the governor bears responsibility for this, just as the federal government does,” he said.

Sura added that his decision goes beyond contesting the governorship, saying it is also aimed at reshaping the mindset of the average plateau citizen and, by extension, the nation.

“in a few days, i will provide more reasons for my resignation from the apc. however, my main goal is to leave a meaningful legacy for our generation. i have the interest, and by the grace of god, i believe i will contest.

“at present, it is unfortunate that no one is challenging mutfwang on the apc platform, and that is a dangerous situation.

“i intend to carry the people’s empathy and my passion to serve. i will certainly join the race,” he said.

the retired general also dismissed the belief that the recent wave of defections to the apc across the country would guarantee the party’s victory in 2027.

he stressed that it is the electorate, not individual politicians, who will ultimately determine the outcome of the election.
