Nafiu Bala, a prominent figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), on Thursday led a group of supporters to the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja.

Bala, who is contesting the party’s leadership, has been in a legal battle with the faction led by David Mark.

His protest came just a day after the Mark-led group also staged a demonstration at the INEC office.

Addressing supporters during the protest, Bala urged INEC to recognise him as the legitimate national chairman of the ADC, citing a Court of Appeal judgment in his favour.

He accused the Mark faction of attempting to unlawfully take over the party’s leadership.

It would be recalled that on April 1, INEC suspended recognition of the ADC leadership following a court order, stating it would not monitor any congresses or conventions organised by either faction until a competent court delivers a final ruling.

The Mark faction, which includes notable politicians such as Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso, has criticised INEC’s position, describing the commission as partisan and accusing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of attempting to impose a one-party system.

However, both the APC and the presidency have rejected the allegations, insisting that the crisis within the ADC is self-inflicted.

Speaking further, Bala alleged that the Mark-led group engaged in irregular practices, including the “unauthorised transfer of party leadership” and the use of “forged signatures” to legitimise its claims.

He warned that such actions undermine democratic principles and erode public trust in political institutions.

Bala also called on relevant authorities to investigate the allegations and ensure accountability, noting that the leadership crisis began after the resignation of former chairman Ralph Nwosu.

He urged INEC to update its records to reflect him as the party’s national chairman, insisting that doing so would be in line with the court’s ruling and help restore order within the ADC.
