The Nigerian Army has announced that troops of the 82 Division dismantled a notorious camp linked to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), in Imo State.

According to a statement posted on the Army’s official X handle, the operation was carried out on April 24, 2026, along the Ubaha-Orsu axis in Orsu Local Government Area following credible intelligence reports.

The mission formed part of a strategic clearance and search operation aimed at dislodging IPOB/ESN fighters from the area and locating the remains of two Army personnel — Master Warrant Officer Linus Musa Audu and Private Gloria Mathew — who were abducted and killed in May 2022 while travelling to their traditional wedding.

The Army stated that troops advanced toward a suspected IPOB/ESN hideout after receiving actionable intelligence and came under heavy gunfire from armed criminals.

Despite the resistance, the troops reportedly engaged the attackers decisively, repelling several ambushes and forcing the suspects to flee.

“The encounter further revealed the desperation and criminal nature of the group, which continues to target innocent citizens and security personnel alike,” the statement noted.

Following the successful clearance of the camp, soldiers conducted an extensive search of the area, leading to the discovery of shallow graves believed to contain the remains of the slain officers.

The Army said the graves were carefully excavated and suspected human remains recovered.

According to the statement, the remains have been secured for forensic examination, including DNA analysis, to confirm their identities.

The Army added that efforts are ongoing to work with the families of the deceased personnel to ensure proper identification and arrange befitting burials in honour of their service.

It noted that the operation reflects the military’s continued commitment to securing justice for fallen personnel while intensifying efforts to dismantle IPOB/ESN criminal infrastructure across the South-East.

The Army also said the discovery of shallow graves within the camp underscores what it described as the group’s violent activities and disregard for human life.

Reassuring the public, the Nigerian Army said operations against criminal elements in the region would continue until peace and security are fully restored.

The statement further urged residents to remain vigilant and support security agencies by providing timely and credible information.
