A factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Kabiru Tanimu-Turaki, has announced that opposition political parties in Nigeria have resolved to field a single presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.

Turaki made the declaration on Saturday at the National Opposition Summit held in Ibadan, where leaders from various political parties convened to strategise ahead of the next election cycle.

He said the decision was aimed at strengthening the opposition’s chances at the polls, despite what he described as efforts by the ruling All Progressives Congress to position Bola Tinubu as its sole presidential candidate.

“Despite the onslaughts and machinations of the ruling party, the APC, to ensure that President Bola Tinubu emerges as the sole presidential candidate in 2027, we shall field candidates and contest the 2027 presidential and other elections,” Turaki said.

He added that opposition parties were committed to unity in pursuit of a common goal.

“We shall work towards fielding one presidential candidate for the 2027 elections. We shall be agreed and supported by all participating opposition parties to rescue our nation and our long-suffering masses,” he stated.

The opposition leaders also called for the resignation of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Joash Ojo Amupitan, alleging bias in favour of the ruling party.

According to them, his continued stay in office could undermine public confidence in the electoral process and heighten political tensions ahead of the elections.

“INEC Chairman… having shown bias and open partisanship in favour of the ruling APC, should not conduct the 2027 general election,” the group stated, warning that the situation could trigger wider national instability.

The summit, which featured prominent opposition figures including former Senate President David Mark, focused on the need for unity, electoral reforms, and what participants described as efforts to address Nigeria’s economic and security challenges ahead of 2027.
