A presidential aspirant of the African Democratic Congress, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, has called on opposition leaders to unite ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that continued fragmentation could weaken their chances of presenting a credible alternative to the ruling party.

Hayatu-Deen made the call on Saturday at a national opposition summit held in Ibadan, hosted by Seyi Makinde.

In a statement issued by his campaign media office, the ADC aspirant said Nigeria’s worsening security challenges, economic hardship, and what he described as a shrinking democratic space require a coordinated national response rather than isolated political efforts.

“Nigeria is at a defining moment. The deepening insecurity, the crushing cost of living and the steady erosion of democratic space demand a collective response. This is not about personal ambition, it is about national rescue,” he said.

He cautioned that opposition parties risk strengthening the current political order if they continue to operate independently, warning that such division could prolong the hardship faced by Nigerians.

Hayatu-Deen urged political actors to move beyond rhetoric and demonstrate “real sacrifice, collaboration and shared national purpose” in the build-up to the 2027 elections.

According to him, the forthcoming polls present a critical opportunity to reshape the country’s future, but only if opposition leaders prioritise national interest over personal ambition and party loyalty.

“Nigerians are looking for leadership that is empathetic, unifying and capable of delivering real change. That responsibility rests on all of us in the opposition to come together and rise to the occasion,” he added.

Reaffirming his commitment to the ADC, he said he would continue to engage party stakeholders and other political actors to build a broad-based coalition focused on improving security, stabilising the economy, and restoring confidence in democratic governance.

The statement noted that Hayatu-Deen also held consultations with key figures, including Jerry Gana of the Peoples Democratic Party and Kashim Imam.

Prominent political leaders at the summit included Governor Makinde, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi.
