The Delta State Police Command has arrested a 31-year-old man, Chukwemeka Destiny, for allegedly attempting to kidnap his aunt who raised him from childhood.

The command’s spokesperson, Edafe Bright, paraded the suspect on Saturday, revealing that he had paid a total of ₦900,000 to individuals he believed were kidnappers to abduct the woman.

According to the police, the suspect made an initial payment of ₦200,000, followed by a second transfer of ₦700,000 to facilitate the planned abduction.

Bright described the incident as part of a disturbing trend of violence against benefactors.

“We’ve had cases where workers killed their employer. We’ve had cases where security men killed their bosses just because they want to take away their jewellery,” he said.

Investigations revealed that Destiny lived with the aunt for about 10 years, from the age of five to 15, before leaving and losing contact with the family.

“All of a sudden, something came to his mind to kidnap his auntie who trained him and saw him through school,” Bright added.

The plot, however, failed after the individuals he contacted turned out not to be kidnappers. Instead, they reportedly set him up and handed him over to the police, thereby preventing the crime.

“Unknown to him, the people he contacted were not kidnappers. They used him as bait and handed him over to the police, saving the life of his aunt,” Bright said.

During interrogation, the suspect admitted to the crime but said he could not explain his motive.

“I am guilty of what happened. I don’t know what came over me,” he said, attributing his actions to “the devil’s work.”

The suspect, a married father of two who claims to run a haulage and building materials business, said the money used for the plot came from his business proceeds.

Reacting to the development, the victim, who identified the suspect as her sister’s son, expressed shock and called for justice.

“Anything they know to do such people, you should do it to him,” she said.

Bright commended her stance, urging members of the public to allow the law to take its course in similar cases.

The suspect is currently in custody with the police Raiders squad as investigations continue.
