Four migrants have been discovered dead near the Slovenian border, while two others are in critical condition after being transported in a truck under what Croatian police described as “inhumane conditions.”

Authorities said the victims were part of a group intercepted near the village of Donje Prilišće, about 70 kilometres southwest of Zagreb. Thirteen additional migrants were found at the scene and have since been taken to a detention facility.

According to police, the group was allegedly abandoned at the border by a suspected smuggler who fled the area.

Officials have yet to confirm the exact cause of death, noting that investigations are ongoing.

Croatia, a member of the European Union, remains a key transit point for migrants travelling along the Balkan route in a bid to reach Western Europe.

In a related incident earlier this year, a Chinese national died after a migrant boat capsized while attempting to cross a river from Bosnia into Croatia.

Data from the European border agency, Frontex, shows that more than 12,500 migrants used the Balkan route in 2025. Since 2014, over 400 people have been reported dead or missing along this corridor, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The IOM has repeatedly warned that migrants on this route face strict border enforcement, often pushing them into dangerous and irregular journeys across difficult terrain in an effort to avoid detection.
