The House of Representatives has called for stricter enforcement of regulations governing the siting of gas filling stations and outlets following a recent explosion in Lagos.

The resolution came after a motion of urgent national importance moved by Hon. Adesola Samuel Adedayo, who drew attention to a gas explosion that occurred in the early hours of May 5, 2026, along Adeleye Street in Apapa Federal Constituency.

Adedayo expressed concern that the blast, which happened at a construction site behind two shops, caused widespread damage to nearby buildings, significant financial losses, and left five people injured, including a student reportedly heading to school.

He commended residents and officials of the Lagos State Fire Service for their prompt response in rescuing victims and evacuating them to Gbagada General Hospital and other nearby health facilities for treatment.

The lawmaker warned about the recurring incidents of gas explosions, particularly in densely populated and low-income areas, stressing that continued regulatory lapses pose serious threats to lives and property.

Following deliberations, the House mandated relevant authorities to enforce existing safety guidelines on the location and operation of gas facilities nationwide.

Lawmakers also directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other concerned bodies to provide immediate relief support to victims of the Apapa explosion.
