The Nigeria Police Force has arrested 10 suspects in connection with the violence that broke out during the All Progressives Congress primaries in Egbe, Alimosho area of Lagos State.
The incident occurred on Onilewura Street, along Liasu Road, on Saturday, triggering panic among party members and residents after suspected hoodlums reportedly invaded the venue and fired sporadically.
The disruption forced voters and party officials to flee the scene for safety, while several party members reportedly sustained varying degrees of injuries during the chaos.
The suspects also took advantage of the chaos to rob residents and participants of their mobile phones and other valuables.
Confirming the incident, the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Femi Adeoye, said no life was lost during the attack, contrary to rumours circulating in some quarters.
He said the suspects linked to the chaos had been taken to the Ikotun Divisional Police Station for further investigation.
According to him, a locally fabricated firearm was recovered from the suspects during the operation.
“The hoodlums responsible for the disturbance have been arrested and taken into custody at Ikotun Divisional Police Station. A firearm was also recovered from them,” he said.
Adeoye assured residents and party supporters that a thorough investigation would be conducted to uncover those behind the attack and their motives, stressing that anyone found culpable would be prosecuted.
He also appealed to residents to remain calm and continue supporting security agencies with credible information that could aid ongoing investigations.
