PEACE CORPS RAISES CONCERNS OVER CONTINUED BANDIT ATTACKS ON SCHOOLS ACROSS NIGERIA

The Peace Corps of Nigeria (PCN) has raised serious concern over the persistent attacks and invasions of schools by bandits across the country, leading to the abduction of pupils and teachers for ransom.
The Corps warned that continued assaults on educational institutions, if not urgently addressed, could weaken the foundation of the nation’s education system.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, the National Commandant, Dickson Akoh, described the trend as alarming, noting that such incidents expose students to trauma and fear while discouraging parents from sending their children to school, thereby threatening the future of Nigerian youths.
Given the rising insecurity and repeated kidnappings in schools, Akoh called for the deployment of Peace Corps personnel to educational institutions to help address the challenge.
He explained that the proposal involves a multi-layered security approach that combines grassroots monitoring with early-warning mechanisms designed to detect and prevent threats before they escalate.
According to him, trained Peace Corps officers would serve as school safety personnel to tackle issues such as cultism, drug abuse, and unauthorised access, while ensuring a proactive security presence within learning environments.
He added that deployed personnel would maintain continuous surveillance and gather intelligence within school premises, identifying suspicious activities and potential security breaches.
Akoh said such intelligence would be promptly shared with relevant security agencies to ensure quick and coordinated responses to threats against school communities.
He urged the relevant authorities to consider the proposal, stressing that strengthening school security is vital to protecting education and safeguarding national development.
