No fewer than two persons lost their lives in a fatal road accident that occurred at the Ijapo area of Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Wednesday.
The tragic incident involved a Nissan car with registration number Ondo WWW 322 TA, a truck without a registration number, and a motorcycle.
Two other persons reportedly sustained varying degrees of injuries in the crash, which happened in front of the headquarters of the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO), where officials were said to be carrying out routine vehicle inspection and licence checks at the time.
Eyewitnesses said the victims, believed to be brothers from the same family, were riding on a motorcycle when the speeding truck lost control and rammed into the motorcycle, the Nissan car and other vehicles, killing the duo instantly.
A commercial driver whose vehicle was damaged in the incident recounted how he narrowly escaped death.
“I came to deliver goods to my boss, but the shop was yet to open, so I parked my vehicle. As I was moving towards the boot to bring down the goods in front of the shop, I suddenly heard people shouting.
“When I looked back, I saw the tipper clearing vehicles and motorcycles. I immediately ran for my life. You can see how badly my vehicle was damaged. The tipper crushed the two men on the motorcycle instantly,” he said.
The incident sparked outrage among residents and youths in the area, who reportedly attempted to attack VIO officials believed to have contributed to the accident. Police officers, however, intervened swiftly to prevent the situation from escalating.
Confirming the incident, the Ondo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Samuel Ibitoye, attributed the crash to brake failure.
“The accident occurred as a result of brake failure. Four persons were involved, while two were killed. The corpses of the deceased were deposited at Ondo State Hospital Mortuary by men of the Nigeria Police Force,” he said.
The Ondo State Police Command also confirmed the accident, stating that preliminary investigations showed the truck collided with the motorcycle and the Nissan vehicle from behind.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said police operatives promptly responded to the scene to restore order and document the incident.
“The motorcycle rider and his yet-to-be-identified passenger were immediately rushed to the Federal University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Akure, where they were both confirmed dead by medical personnel on duty,” Jimoh stated.
He added that the remains of the deceased had been deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy, while the affected vehicles and motorcycle had been taken into police custody for further investigation.
The latest accident comes barely two days after another fatal crash in Plateau State claimed two lives when a trailer collided with a Toyota Corolla at Kwang community in Jos South Local Government Area.
