The Presidency on Friday explained that despite the recent presidential order on the new Democracy Day, June 12 of this year would not be declared as a public holiday.
The clarification was contained in a message posted on one of the Presidency’s verified Twitter handle, @AsoRock.
The message read, “There have been questions regarding whether or not there will be a federal public holiday on June 12, 2018. The answer is ‘no’.
“Presidential order says June 12 ‘in future years’ will replace May 29th as a national public holiday in celebration of Nigeria’s Democracy Day.”
President Muhammadu Buhari had on Wednesday directed that henceforth, the nation’s Democracy Day would be holding on June 12 of every year as against the current arrangement where the ceremony holds on May 29.
Apart from Abiola, Buhari said he would also honour his running mate, Alhaji Babagana Kingibe; and the late human rights activist, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, with the second highest National honour, the Grand Commander of the Niger.
Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to consider conferring a posthumous national honour on Mrs. Kudirat Abiola, the wife of the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential elections, late Chief MKO Abiola.  The ruling party made this appeal while joining Nigerians from all walks of life in commending the President for declaring June 12 as Democracy Day.
This was contained in a statement signed by the APC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, in Abuja, on Friday.
According to the APC, the President deserves accolades for conferring a posthumous award of Nigeria’s highest national honour (Grand Commander of the Federal Republic) on late Abiola, winner of the annulled presidential election of June 12, 1993.
The statement partly read, “The All Progressives Congress calls on the President to consider granting similar honour to Alhaja Kudirat Abiola.”
