ABIODUN CAUTIONS PRINCIPALS AND HEAD TEACHERS AGAINST ILLEGAL FEE COLLECTION IN OGUN SCHOOLS

In a bid to strengthen its free education policy and address the issue of out-of-school children in Ogun State, the administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun has reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on the collection of illegal levies in public primary and secondary schools.
The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Abayomi Arigbabu, gave the warning on Monday during a meeting with the Headteachers General (HG) of the four divisions in Ogun State, alongside officials of the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) and the Association of Primary School Headteachers of Nigeria (AOPSHON) in Abeokuta.
Arigbabu stressed that any principal, headteacher, or teacher found guilty of collecting unauthorized fees would face strict sanctions.
He disclosed that the ministry had already circulated a directive to school administrators, which also bans extravagant graduation ceremonies in public schools, reaffirming the government’s commitment to free, quality, and accessible education.
“We will not tolerate anyone embarrassing the government by charging illegal fees. Graduation ceremonies in all primary and secondary schools have been prohibited to reduce financial pressure on parents and pupils,” he said.
He warned that anyone who violates the policy would be duly sanctioned.
Speaking on behalf of the Headteachers General, Ijebu Bloc, Mr. Benjamin Alonge urged school administrators to comply fully with government directives and continue supporting efforts to eliminate illegal charges in schools.
Similarly, the President of ANCOPSS in Ogun State, Mr. Alaba Olugbewesa, and the Chairman of AOPSHON, Mr. Tajudeen Adeosun, commended the Abiodun administration for its reforms, noting that they have positively transformed the education sector in the state.
