The Ondo State Security Network Agency, codenamed Amotekun, has arrested no fewer than 32 suspected criminals across the state in a series of intelligence-driven operations targeting kidnapping, anti-grazing violations, attempted murder, conspiracy, and theft.
Speaking on Sunday at the Amotekun headquarters in Akure, the State Commander, Adetunji Adeleye, said the arrests were the result of intensified surveillance and coordinated operations carried out in collaboration with other security agencies.
According to Adeleye, 12 suspects were arrested for breaching public law and order, three for offences related to anti-grazing and farmer-herder clashes, while 17 others were linked to kidnap-related crimes.
Among those arrested, Adeleye said, were three men Ibrahim (40), Yunusa (30), and Abdukadri (25) who allegedly attempted to kill their Fulani employer after roasting 10 of his cows in Idoani.
In Oba Akoko, an area that has recorded several kidnapping incidents around Akungba Akoko, the commander said Amotekun operatives acted on intelligence, laid an ambush and arrested Pius (23) and John (35) at a suspected ransom exchange point. He noted that other collaborators were still at large and efforts were ongoing to apprehend them.
Adeleye added that Elura, Alilu, Adamu and Kamal, aged between 24 and 29, were arrested around Ile-Oluji and Ondo town in connection with various criminal activities. In Akin Camp, Odigbo Local Government Area, operatives also arrested Mohamed Abubakar, Abdulahi, Yakubu (aged between 22 and 35) and Abba Aliu (29).
“One of the suspects had previously been arrested for kidnap-related offences but escaped from lawful custody. He was later re-arrested at Akin Camp, where the kidnapping incident occurred. The victims were successfully rescued,” Adeleye said.
In Agbogbo area of Akure, three suspects were arrested while in possession of items they could not reasonably explain, while four others were apprehended at the Akure garage for conspiracy, assault and breach of public peace.
The commander further disclosed that Abdulahi, Kada and Useni were arrested for conspiracy, stealing and anti-grazing-related offences in Elegbeka Forest Reserve and Ifon. He added that Friday (43) was arrested for breaking and stealing, while Yayah Abba was apprehended alongside Masadi and Abubakar for stealing motorcycles and water pumps.
Adeleye said Ondo State remained peaceful, noting a steady decline in criminal activities. He recalled that the arrests came days after Amotekun operatives intercepted a Mercedes-Benz truck conveying 38 men suspected to have arrived from the northern part of the country. According to him, the suspects, intercepted at the Cathedral area of Akure, were unable to state a definite destination within the state during interrogation.
