The Anambra State Government has approved the celebration of the Imo Awka Festival 2026, scheduled to hold on Saturday.

The government had earlier proposed a postponement of the event, noting that it coincided with the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) primary elections in the state, raising concerns over security logistics due to the clash of major activities.

Officials had warned that hosting both events on the same day could overstretch security arrangements and suggested a shift of the cultural festival, which is dedicated to the Awka deity of fertility and purification.

However, in a letter issued by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and signed by Commissioner Udorji Amedu, the government reversed its position and granted approval for the festival to proceed.

The letter, addressed to the President General of the Awka Development Union and copied to the Traditional Ruler of Awka, His Royal Highness Gibson Nwosu (Eze Uzu II), as well as the leadership of the Ozo Awka Society, stated that the decision followed assurances of adequate security and orderly conduct from organisers.

The ministry, however, laid out strict conditions for the celebration. It directed that no public roads should be blocked or closed, and that free movement of people and vehicles must not be disrupted.

It also banned masquerades or participants from carrying or displaying dangerous weapons, warning against harassment, intimidation, flogging, or any form of violence against road users or members of the public.

Participants were urged to conduct themselves peacefully and uphold the cultural values of the Awka people throughout the festival.

The government congratulated the traditional ruler and the people of Awka on the occasion, while urging full compliance with the directives to ensure a safe and orderly celebration.
