ARMY ACTIVATES THREE NEW FORMATIONS IN KEBBI TO STRENGTHEN SECURITY

The Nigerian Army has operationalised three new military formations in Kebbi State as part of efforts to expand its presence and strengthen operations against banditry and other security threats in the North-West.
The formations are the 28 Armoured Brigade and Garrison in Birnin Kebbi, 281 Tank Battalion in Yauri, and 381 Artillery Regiment in Kaoje.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, represented by the General Officer Commanding, 8 Division, Nigerian Army and Commander, Sector 2, Joint Task Force North-West, Operation Fansan Yamma, Maj. Gen. Paul Koughna, spoke during the operationalisation ceremony.
Shaibu said the establishment of the formations was part of the Army’s efforts to optimise its force structure, strengthen command and control, expand its operational footprint and improve response times to security threats across the region.
He charged the Acting Commander of the 28 Brigade, Col. Abdullahi Umar, to ensure that the new formation effectively contributed to ongoing military operations within its area of responsibility.
According to him, the brigade would play a key role in combating banditry and other criminal activities, particularly in vulnerable communities across Kebbi State.
The Army Chief also urged officers and soldiers to maintain discipline and professionalism while working closely with other security agencies and relevant stakeholders.
He stressed the importance of observing the Rules of Engagement and protecting law-abiding citizens while carrying out their constitutional duties.
Shaibu further expressed condolences to residents of Jandutse community over the recent killing of a resident during a bandit attack. He assured the community that the military would strengthen its presence in the area to prevent further attacks.
The Kebbi State Government welcomed the development, describing the activation of the formations as a significant boost to security operations across the state.
The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed BK, said the establishment of the formations demonstrated the Army’s commitment to tackling security challenges in Kebbi and other parts of the country.
He described the 28 Armoured Brigade and Garrison in Birnin Kebbi as a decisive step towards improving security operations and responding more effectively to emerging threats.
Yakubu added that the 281 Tank Battalion in Yauri and 381 Artillery Regiment in Kaoje would strengthen counter-insurgency and combat operations across the state.
He also commended the police, Department of State Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, hunters and community-based vigilante groups for their contributions to protecting lives and property.
The commissioner assured residents that the state government would continue supporting security agencies and urged members of the public to provide credible information on the activities and movements of bandits and other criminal groups.
He also called on residents to avoid offering assistance to criminals and urged youths to shun violence and criminal activities, stressing that peace and stability were essential for sustained development in the state.
