The African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has criticised President Bola Tinubu over the worsening electricity situation in the country, accusing his administration of failing to provide stable power supply despite increasing electricity tariffs.

Atiku, in a statement issued on Sunday by his Senior Media Aide, Phrank Shuaibu, said the explanations offered by the Tinubu administration could not provide electricity to Nigerian homes and businesses.

He said Nigerians were tired of what he described as excuses and propaganda, while millions of households and businesses continued to experience poor electricity supply.

According to him, rather than address the challenges facing the power sector, the government has continued to offer explanations for its shortcomings despite the rising cost of electricity.

Atiku noted that electricity consumers across the country are categorised into Bands A, B, C, D and E, with different tariffs. He said some Band A customers pay approximately N209.50 per kilowatt-hour before Value Added Tax (VAT).

He, however, lamented that consumers across the different tariff bands continued to experience unreliable power supply despite the varying charges.

He said, “The power fails, but the bill arrives. No family should have to weigh the cost of electricity against the cost of food. No business should be left to pay more while receiving less.”

The former Vice President also questioned the Federal Government’s plan to end electricity subsidies from 2027, despite assurances that there would be no immediate increase in tariffs.

He demanded clarity on the implications of the planned subsidy removal for electricity consumers, particularly regarding their future bills.

Atiku called on the Tinubu administration to stop politicising the electricity crisis and prioritise the provision of reliable power supply to Nigerians.
