The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 70-year-old man, identified as Abubakar, over the alleged defilement of an eight-year-old girl in the Tsakanin Bayara area of Bauchi metropolis.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu.

According to the statement, the case was reported at the ‘E’ Division, Yelwa, on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, by the victim’s 48-year-old father.

The police said the father reported that on Sunday, August 24, at about 11am, the suspect, who resides in the same area, allegedly lured his daughter to an unfinished building, where he allegedly sexually assaulted her.

Following the report, police operatives attached to the division arrested the suspect.

The command said the suspect allegedly confessed to the offence during interrogation.

The victim was subsequently taken to the Police Clinic for medical examination and care.

The Commissioner of Police condemned the alleged act, describing it as unacceptable, and assured the public that the matter would be thoroughly investigated.

The suspect is currently being investigated at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Bauchi, with the police saying the case would be handled discreetly before prosecution in accordance with the law.

The command reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance towards sexual violence and child abuse, urging parents, guardians and members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly to the nearest police station.

The police also called on residents to support efforts aimed at protecting children from sexual abuse and other forms of violence.
