The President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, defended the reward given to the Super Falcons following their triumph at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
In a post on his X account, Onanuga expressed surprise at the backlash from some Nigerians, questioning why the presidential gesture was facing criticism.
He drew a comparison with the Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) reality show, noting that its winner receives a grand prize of ₦150 million.
“When you consider that Multichoice, the organiser of BBNaija reality show, awards ₦150 million to the winner, it’s puzzling why some Nigerians are criticizing President Tinubu’s rewards to the Super Falcons,” Onanuga wrote on X. “The president has recognised and rewarded excellence, creativity, dedication, football talent, and the resilient Nigerian spirit.”
As previously reported by the media, President Bola Tinubu announced a cash reward of $100,000 for each Super Falcons player and $50,000 for each coach and support staff member.
He also conferred the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on all 24 players and 11 technical crew members.
In addition, every team member will receive a three-bedroom home under the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Housing Scheme.
