The Benue State Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Timothy Ornguga, has urged journalists to shun the spread of fake news and resist attempts by politicians to influence their reportage through financial inducement.
Ornguga made the call on Friday during an interaction with journalists in Makurdi, the state capital.
The commissioner expressed concern over the growing practice of spreading false information, particularly against the government and its appointees, as well as the distortion of court judgments.
He described the dissemination of fake news by social media practitioners as unacceptable, stressing that professional journalists had a responsibility to counter misinformation by providing the public with accurate and verified information.
Ornguga urged journalists to always cross-check information before publication by visiting relevant ministries, departments and agencies to obtain the correct facts.
He emphasised that truthful and responsible journalism remained essential to keeping the public properly informed.
The commissioner also commended journalists in the state for their contributions, noting that the Ministry of Justice was committed to ensuring that all residents of Benue State, regardless of political affiliation, religion or business interests, had access to justice.
