Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed during Denmark’s international friendly against Ukraine in Odense on Sunday, marking the second such incident of his career on the pitch.
Providing an update after the scare, the Danish Football Association said Eriksen was conscious and in stable condition.
“Christian Eriksen is conscious and doing well under the circumstances,” the association said in a post on social media.
The incident occurred five years after the 34-year-old suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s UEFA European Championship match against Finland in 2021.
According to the Danish national team doctor, Morten Boesen, Eriksen was able to walk off the pitch unaided following the collapse, while his implanted pacemaker functioned as expected during the episode.
Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself. As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should.
“He was briefly unconscious but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him.
“He will now undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine what caused the incident. We are in ongoing contact with him and the doctors at the hospital.
But Christian is doing well, and he asked me to send his regards to all the players and tell them that he was okay,” Boesen said.
