An American football player, David Coleman Jr, has suffered a fractured leg after an unusual collision with a referee during East Carolina Pirates’ 17-9 victory over Temple Owls in the United States.
According to BBC Sport on Sunday, the incident occurred while Coleman Jr was standing on the field with his teammates between plays.
The referee, who was approaching the players from behind, reportedly slipped and crashed into the defensive back near the 40-yard line, sending him tumbling onto the turf.
Coleman Jr remained on the ground for several minutes before two teammates carried him off the field to prevent him from putting weight on his injured leg.
East Carolina head coach, Blake Harrell, later confirmed that an X-ray conducted at half-time revealed that the player had fractured his fibula.
Reacting to the incident, Harrell expressed sympathy for the injured player, describing the collision as an unusual occurrence.
“Our thoughts and our prayers are with him. But that’s just one of those things. Kind of wild it happens, I’d never seen that from an official,” he said.
Coleman Jr recorded one tackle before leaving the game.
Despite the setback, East Carolina held on to secure a 17-9 victory over Temple.
The incident has drawn attention because the defender sustained the injury following an accidental collision with a match official rather than an opposing player.
