DABIRI-EREWA HAILS NIGERIAN WOMAN, MARYANN IJI-ODUNTAN, FOR RECEIVING KING CHARLES’ AWARD FOR VOLUNTARY SERVICE IN UK

The Chairman/CEO of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has applauded the recognition of Ms. MaryAnn Kikelomo Iji-Oduntan, a Nigerian community development advocate based in the United Kingdom, for receiving the prestigious King Charles’ Award for Voluntary Service the UK’s highest honour for volunteer groups.
The award acknowledges Iji-Oduntan’s outstanding dedication to community service, particularly her work in women empowerment, youth development, and family support through initiatives such as Women Thrive, Food Thrive, Holiday Thrive, and Teen Thrive.
In a statement issued by the Commission’s Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Dabiri-Erewa described the recognition as “a proud moment for Nigeria” and lauded Iji-Oduntan for exemplifying “the resilience, compassion, and excellence of Nigerians in the Diaspora.”
“MaryAnn’s commitment to uplifting lives through volunteerism is truly inspiring,” Dabiri-Erewa noted. “Her leadership at the St. Barnabas Centre in Oldham has not only built confidence in individuals but also fostered stronger, more resilient communities especially among women and young people.”
She added that the award was “well-deserved” and encouraged other Nigerians abroad to draw inspiration from Iji-Oduntan’s tireless service and impact.
The NiDCOM chief further emphasized that this recognition places Iji-Oduntan in a distinguished circle of change-makers across the UK whose efforts continue to shape lives and strengthen community bonds.
“On behalf of the government and people of Nigeria, we celebrate this achievement and commend Ms. Iji-Oduntan as a role model and a beacon of hope for the global Nigerian community,” Dabiri-Erewa stated.
The King’s Award for Voluntary Service, formerly known as The Queen’s Award, is awarded annually to exceptional volunteer groups across the United Kingdom, highlighting their commitment to making lasting societal impact.
