DEATH TOLL IN KWARA BUILDING COLLAPSE RISES TO FIVE

The death toll from the building collapse in Ilorin, Kwara State, has risen to five, with the deceased, including a mother and her four children, buried according to Islamic rites.
The development came as the affected family agreed to demolish the remaining part of the structure following the collapse of an adjoining section of the building.
Family members and relatives were seen at the scene paying condolences, while the father and two surviving children are still receiving treatment in hospital.
According to the head of the family, Mr. Lanre Qudus, the family has vacated the building and will soon demolish the remaining structure after it failed the integrity test.
The Chairman of the Kwara State Technical Committee of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, Bashir Lawal, said the government needed to conduct an audit of buildings across the state to prevent a recurrence.
The three-storey building collapsed at Popo Giwa, Ilorin, on Tuesday.
The incident occurred around 5 a.m. at No. 41 Popo Giwa Street, beside Gogoro Mosque, with eight members of the family initially trapped beneath the rubble.
An eyewitness, Abdulganiy Musa, had told Channels Television that the father of the family is a serving soldier, while the mother worked as a casual staff member at the Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies, Ilorin.
