The Department of State Services (DSS) has released four individuals arrested and detained over alleged links to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), paying them a total of N20 million as compensation for wrongful detention.
The Director-General of the DSS, Oluwatosin Ajayi, reportedly ordered their immediate release after a thorough review established that they had no involvement in IPOB activities.
The released individuals are Emele Uduma Ibe, Berefgagha Appah, Ondokeyilemi Aggry and Oyeinmokebebeton Aggry.
According to the Service, the four were arrested in error and had spent years in detention before a review panel cleared them of the allegations.
Since assuming office, Ajayi has reportedly initiated efforts to address cases of wrongful detention, ordering the release and compensation of several individuals affected by such actions.
Recently, the DSS chief released a Kaduna farmer who had spent two years in detention over alleged links to Boko Haram and approved N3 million in compensation for him. He also increased the compensation for a Jos businessman mistakenly shot by DSS operatives in 2016 from N10 million to N20 million.
Similarly, in November last year, Ajayi ordered the release of Kenneth Okechukwu Nwafor, who was arrested in July 2022 over alleged IPOB links, and approved N5 million as compensation.
Before Nwafor’s release, three other men from Abia State — Augustine Udemba, Nelson Onyedikachi Udemba and Ifesinachi Eze — had also been freed, with each receiving N5 million in compensation.
Earlier, in October 2025, Ajayi ordered the release of an Abuja-based businesswoman, Mrs Chineze Ozoadibe, and approved N10 million in compensation for her.
