EFCC ARRESTS FORMER LG CHAIRMANSHIP ASPIRANT FOR N14M FRAUD, IMPERSONATION OF BENUE GOVERNOR’S AIDE

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Makurdi Zonal Directorate, have arrested Fanen Ochough, a former Local Government Chairmanship aspirant in Gwer West, Benue State, for alleged impersonation and defrauding multiple victims of N14 million.
In a statement shared on the agency’s official Instagram page on Tuesday, the EFCC revealed that Ochough was arrested for impersonating Dr. Emmanuel Chenge, the Principal Private Secretary to the Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hycent Alia.
According to the EFCC, Ochough used Dr. Chenge’s name and office to deceive victims with fake promises of contract awards and job placements, leading to the collection of large sums of money.
The suspect was apprehended on Friday, November 7, 2025, within Makurdi metropolis, following a petition lodged at the zonal office.
Among his victims, the EFCC said, was a former Deputy Governor of Benue State, Dr. Stephen Lawani, who was reportedly defrauded of several millions of naira.
The anti-graft agency stated that the suspect would be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.
In a related development, the EFCC recently declared former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, wanted over an alleged case of conspiracy and dishonest conversion of US$14,859,257.
