Super Falcons coach Augustine Eguavoen has suggested that goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie could be deployed as a centre-back, citing her technical ability and versatility.

Eguavoen made the disclosure following Nigeria’s 2-0 victory over Comoros in the first leg of their second-round fixture of the 2028 Olympic qualifiers on Friday in Ikenne-Remo.

After a goalless first half, Michelle Alozie opened the scoring for Nigeria three minutes into the second half with a close-range effort, before Uchenna Kanu sealed the victory with a header in the 60th minute.

The Super Falcons have been dealing with defensive challenges following the unavailability of Oluwatosin Demehin and the retirement of Osinachi Ohale from international football.

As a result, Eguavoen deployed midfielder Christy Ucheibe in central defence, despite the position not being her usual role for the national team.

Speaking during his post-match media briefing, the coach was asked whether Ucheibe would continue playing in the position. In response, he highlighted the importance of having players capable of performing in multiple roles, including Nnadozie.

“This is entirely feasible given our fortunate circumstances. My strategic approach requires that for a player to represent us, recognising this is a collective endeavour, they must demonstrate proficiency across multiple positions, which constitutes a considerable benefit,” Eguavoen said.

He also explained that Demehin’s absence and Ohale’s decision to retire from international football had necessitated adjustments to the team’s defensive setup.

“Regrettably, Demehin is absent. Osinachi has withdrawn from international competition, despite my efforts to persuade her otherwise, yet she had already determined her course, and we must honour that decision,” he added.

Eguavoen further praised Ucheibe’s versatility, noting that the midfielder possesses the qualities required to perform effectively in different positions.

He maintained that the ability of players to adapt to multiple roles gives Nigeria a competitive advantage.

The coach subsequently revealed that Nnadozie could also be considered for a role in central defence, pointing to her technical proficiency with the ball during training sessions.

“She (Nnadozie) is capable of playing centre-back. Observing her technical proficiency with the ball throughout our training sessions demonstrates this capability,” he stated.
