ENUGU RESERVOIR COLLAPSE CLAIMS FIVE LIVES, POLICE LAUNCH PROBE

The Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mr Mamman Giwa, has ordered an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collapse of a concrete water reservoir that killed five members of a family in Awgu Local Government Area of the state.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists in Enugu, adding that the owner of the building on which the reservoir was constructed, Mr Onyedikachi Nkwo, had been detained.
According to Ndukwe, the incident occurred on Sept. 18 in Umuike-Aja Village, Nenwenta Community, when a concrete reservoir attached to an uncompleted building collapsed onto a neighbouring bungalow.
The victims were identified as Mr Raphael Onwu, his wife, his mother and their two children.

Ndukwe said police received information about the incident at about 5:45 a.m. and officers from the Awgu Division immediately mobilised to the scene.
He said the rescue operation was carried out with assistance from the National Emergency Management Agency and community members, resulting in the rescue of a nine-year-old boy who was taken to hospital for treatment.
“The five deceased family members were recovered and taken to the hospital, where they were confirmed dead before their remains were deposited at the mortuary for preservation and autopsy,” Ndukwe said.
The police spokesperson said Nkwo, the owner of the building, remained in custody in connection with the incident as investigations continued.
He added that the Commissioner of Police had expressed condolences to the bereaved family and the community, assuring that appropriate action would be taken based on the outcome of the investigation.
Ndukwe urged residents to avoid unsafe construction practices and comply with approved safety standards by engaging qualified professionals for building projects.
