Agency Report

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Nigerians’ rights and privacy in the digital space through robust policy and regulatory frameworks.

Dr. Ayodele Bakare, Assistant Director of the Cybersecurity Department at the National Information Technology Development Agency, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Monday.

He explained that Nigeria implements cybersecurity governance through a collaborative approach involving multiple government agencies, each tasked with specific responsibilities. The overall coordination of national cybersecurity efforts is provided by the Office of the National Security Adviser via the National Cybersecurity Coordination Centre, which serves as its operational arm.

“At the national level, cybersecurity implementation is done collectively, and different government organisations are responsible for implementing different aspects of the national cybersecurity framework. At the top, however, the Office of the National Security Adviser coordinates these efforts through the National Cybersecurity Coordination Centre,” Bakare said.

He noted that the National Cybersecurity Policy and Strategy Framework serves as a key policy instrument guiding the country’s cybersecurity initiatives. Additionally, the Cybercrimes (Prohibition and Prevention) Act 2015 provides a legal framework that was recently amended in 2024 to strengthen Nigeria’s response to cyber threats and digital crimes.

Bakare also highlighted that NITDA has introduced sector-specific regulations aimed at enhancing cybersecurity across various industries in the country.

The government’s efforts reflect an ongoing commitment to safeguarding Nigerians in the digital space while ensuring a coordinated and resilient cybersecurity framework.
