FOUR MORE KILLED IN ANAMBRA COMMUNAL CLASH, GOVT SHUTS OTUOCHA MARKET

Four additional people have died, making the total number of deaths five, after a violent fight broke out between the Aguleri and Umuoba Anam communities in the Anambra East local government area of Anambra State.
The state Deputy Governor, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim, who went to the troubled area with the state Commissioner of Police, CP Nanna Oji Ama, ordered the instant stoppage of all economic and other activities in the market after the fighting in the area got worse.
Several houses and shops were ruined, and in a video that went viral, people could be heard telling armed men to shoot anyone they saw. Many people from the area have left, and the usually busy Otuocha-Umuoba Anam road is now empty.
Rice mills and hundreds of bags of rice were destroyed, and smoke could be seen coming from many homes.
Traders were seen trying to save some of their belongings.
The reason for the fight was said to be the claim that the Aguleri Community planned to put up a signpost and install CCTV cameras on the border between the two communities, which the Umuoba Anam Community did not agree with.
Ibezim, the Chairman of the Anambra State Boundary Committee, told people not to do any business in the market until the state government finishes its investigation and takes action against those involved in the incident.
He also said that no community leader or local government head can decide on the boundaries between communities without the state government knowing, and that the State Boundary Committee is the only group allowed to set boundaries in the state.
However, the traditional leaders of Aguleri, Igwe Mike Indigo, and Umuoba Anam, Igwe George Ekwealor, have asked their people to stay calm and let the government deal with the situation.
