The Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Benue State, Ardo Muhammad, and another man, Yakubu Isah, have been shot dead by suspected gunmen in Otukpo Local Government Area.

The attack, which occurred on Friday, has reportedly heightened tensions across parts of Otukpo and neighbouring Ohinmini Local Government Area.

According to sources, Muhammad had earlier attended a peace meeting organised by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ohinmini LGA. The meeting brought together Fulani leaders and representatives of the Ayunne community to address recent security challenges in the area.

Reports indicate that Muhammad and Isah were returning from the meeting when their vehicle was ambushed by armed assailants at Okudu community in Otukpo LGA. Both men were killed in the attack.

Muhammad’s eldest son confirmed the incident during a telephone conversation, stating that his father was murdered while travelling back from the peace meeting.

The Chairman of Otukpo Local Government Area, Maxwell Ogiri, also confirmed the killing, describing it as a troubling development.

“It is true that the state chairman of MACBAN was killed within Otukpo LGA this afternoon. The incident has created tension within the community and surrounding areas,” Ogiri said.

He appealed to residents to remain peaceful, assuring them that security agencies were taking steps to address the situation.

Similarly, the Chairman of Ohinmini Local Government Area, Adole Gabriel, said the deceased had participated in the peace meeting aimed at resolving lingering security concerns in Ayunne community.

“You may recall that there was a crisis in Ayunne community some time ago in which lives were lost. Following that, the DPO convened a peace meeting involving Fulani herders and members of the community.

“I was informed that the meeting ended successfully. Unfortunately, while returning, the MACBAN chairman and another individual were reportedly ambushed by gunmen at Okudu community in Otukpo LGA and killed,” Gabriel said.

The spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, DSP Udeme Edet, confirmed the incident and said an investigation had been launched to uncover those responsible for the attack.
