INEC, JAMB EXPLORE BIOMETRIC TECHNOLOGY PARTNERSHIP

The Independent National Electoral Commission has expressed its willingness to collaborate with the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board by providing access to biometric verification technology to strengthen the integrity of JAMB’s examination processes.
The development followed a courtesy visit by the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, and members of the Board’s management team to the INEC headquarters in Abuja on Friday.
Aina explained that JAMB sought INEC’s assistance because of the electoral commission’s extensive experience in using biometric technology to identify and verify large numbers of Nigerians.

According to him, the Board is exploring ways to further improve the credibility of its examinations and was informed that INEC might have some biometric equipment that was no longer being actively deployed.
He therefore appealed to the commission to consider making some of the equipment available to JAMB to enhance its biometric verification system.
Responding, INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, welcomed the JAMB delegation and commended the Board for its role in Nigeria’s education sector and the development of young Nigerians.
Amupitan said INEC’s recent electoral activities, including the Anambra and Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections, the Ekiti and Osun governorship elections and various bye-elections, had further demonstrated the commission’s growing capacity in the deployment of technology.
He noted that the use of technology during the elections had earned commendation from key stakeholders, including the Office of the National Security Adviser and the United Kingdom High Commission, particularly for contributing to the credibility and peaceful conduct of the exercises.
The INEC chairman subsequently directed the commission’s Director of Information and Communications Technology, Dr Lawrence Bayode, to examine JAMB’s request and conduct a proof-of-concept assessment.
He said the assessment would establish the availability, technical condition and suitability of any biometric verification equipment that could be deployed to support JAMB.
Amupitan described the visit as evidence of the increasing importance of inter-agency cooperation, stressing that government institutions should leverage their expertise and available resources to promote national development.
He assured the JAMB delegation that INEC was open to exploring additional areas of collaboration that could improve the capacity of both institutions to effectively discharge their mandates.
In his response, Aina thanked the INEC chairman and management for the warm reception and reaffirmed JAMB’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with the electoral commission.
He said the Board was particularly interested in leveraging technology and institutional expertise to improve the efficiency, credibility and integrity of its examination processes.
