The Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) has suspended the indefinite strike embarked upon by public school teachers in Oyo State following a directive from the union’s national leadership.

The decision was announced in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Oyo State NUT Chairman, Hassan Fatai, and the union’s Secretary, Olukayode Salami.

According to the statement, the suspension followed an assessment of the prevailing security situation, as well as appeals from the Oyo State Government and other concerned stakeholders.

The union said teachers are expected to resume their duties following the intervention, while efforts continue to address issues surrounding the safety and welfare of pupils, students and education workers in the state.

The strike had been declared in response to concerns over the abduction of schoolchildren, which heightened fears about security within the education sector.

Further details are expected from the union and relevant authorities.
