Bayern Munich were held to a dramatic 3-3 draw by Viking FK in the UEFA Champions League league phase after surrendering their lead late in the game in a disappointing outing for the German giants.

For the second consecutive match, Bayern found themselves trailing early. Just over a minute into the encounter, Viking defender Gianni Stensness rose above Jonathan Tah and Kim Min-jae to head home Zlatko Tripić’s corner and give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Despite being warned about Viking’s threat from set pieces before the match, Bayern appeared unprepared for the early setback. The visitors also struggled to convert several promising scoring opportunities as their performance deteriorated.

Viking doubled their advantage in the 38th minute after Peter Christiansen capitalised on a Bayern turnover. Erik Botheim delivered a perfectly weighted long pass that allowed Christiansen to race past Nathaniel Brown before calmly finishing to make it 2-0.

Following a disappointing first half, Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany made three substitutions, withdrawing Lennart Karl, Brown and Tah for Ismael Saibari, Alphonso Davies and Dayot Upamecano. Karl had little influence on the game, while mistakes from the other two players contributed to Viking’s goals.

Bayern eventually found a way back into the contest when Viking conceded a penalty after Konrad Laimer was fouled inside the box. Harry Kane stepped up and converted in the 54th minute to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

The goal lifted Bayern’s confidence, and Kane struck again six minutes later, rising to meet Joshua Kimmich’s cross with a header that levelled the score at 2-2.

Luis Díaz appeared to have completed the turnaround shortly afterwards, but his effort was ruled out for offside, extending his frustrating spell in front of goal.

Bayern eventually took the lead in the 71st minute when Kane delivered an excellent diagonal pass to Laimer, who set up Díaz to finish and make it 3-2.

However, the visitors’ advantage was undermined when Michael Olise received a second yellow card for throwing the ball at Tripić and striking him in the face, leaving Bayern with 10 men.

The dismissal gave Viking renewed hope, and the hosts took full advantage in the final minute of regulation time. Bayern lost possession in their own half through Laimer and Kane, allowing Tripić to deliver a dangerous cross towards Herman Johan Haugen.

The Viking right-back rose above Davies to head the ball into the net, securing a dramatic 3-3 draw and denying Bayern victory in the closing moments.

Ultimately, Bayern’s squad depth and technical quality proved insufficient against a determined Viking side whose energy and persistence delivered a memorable Champions League result.
