JUST IN: UNCONFIRMED NUMBER OF PASSENGERS FEARED DEAD AS TRAIN DERAIL ALONF WARRI–ITAKPE CORRIDOR

An unconfirmed number of passengers have been feared dead and several others reportedly injured on Monday after four locomotive coaches of the Warri–Itakpe Train derailed, raising concerns over the safety and welfare of those onboard.
As of the time of filing this report, the exact number of casualties had not been confirmed, while some passengers were reportedly yet to be accounted for.
Confirming the incident in a statement, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr. Kayode Opeifa, said emergency response teams and relevant authorities had been mobilised to the scene to manage the situation and provide assistance to affected passengers.
According to the NRC, efforts are ongoing to assess the extent of the incident and ensure the safety and welfare of all passengers.
“The Corporation is closely monitoring developments, and a detailed statement will be issued as soon as more information becomes available,” Opeifa stated.
The railway authority appealed to members of the public to remain calm and avoid relying on unverified information, assuring that updates would be communicated through official channels.
Authorities are expected to provide further details regarding the cause of the derailment, the condition of injured passengers, and ongoing rescue and recovery operations.
