The Kaduna State Police Command has condemned the mob killing of a woman accused of child theft in the Maraban Jos area of the state, describing the incident as barbaric and a violation of the rule of law.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, the incident occurred on June 21, 2026, after the woman was attacked by an angry mob over allegations of child stealing.

The police said officers initially rescued the woman and moved her into protective custody at a police station pending investigation.

However, the situation escalated when a crowd numbering in the hundreds reportedly stormed and surrounded the station, overpowered officers on duty, forcibly removed the woman from custody, killed her and subsequently set her body ablaze. The victim was identified as a native of Maraban Jos.

The Command described the act as criminal and unacceptable, stressing that no individual or group has the right to take the law into their own hands.

Police further disclosed that several suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend others involved. Authorities added that a full-scale investigation has commenced and all those found culpable will be prosecuted.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Rabiu Muhammad, warned that the Command would not tolerate jungle justice, mob violence, or attacks on police formations and personnel.

He urged residents to report suspicious persons and activities through lawful channels and allow security agencies to carry out investigations.

The Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring justice is upheld in accordance with the law.
