KWANKWASO EXTENDS RECONCILIATION OFFER TO ESTRANGED KANO GOVERNOR

The vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has expressed his willingness to reconcile with the incumbent governor, Abba Yusuf.
Kwankwaso made the disclosure in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service published on Sunday, where he spoke about his strained relationship with the Kano governor, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.
Yusuf, who was elected governor in 2023 on the platform of the New Nigeria People’s Party, was previously a prominent supporter of the Kwankwasiyya movement, which is associated with Kwankwaso.
However, their relationship became strained after Yusuf defected to the All Progressives Congress and aligned with former Kano Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, a longstanding political rival of Kwankwaso in the state.
Speaking during the interview, Kwankwaso said he still had affection for Yusuf and was open to reconciliation should the governor wish to make amends.
“I didn’t abandon him, didn’t ask him to go or dismiss him, I still like him,” he said.
The former governor also described himself as a forgiving person, saying he had no desire to hold grudges against those who had wronged him.
Kwankwaso cited his relationship with Ganduje, whom he said he had forgiven despite their past political disagreements.
He recalled that Ganduje had challenged him on several occasions, including during their time at the Ministry of Defence, but said he nevertheless supported Ganduje’s political rise.
Kwankwaso said he does not dictate how people should act, stressing that individuals have different ways of thinking based on their age, background and education.
“I’m not God. So, if Yusuf or whoever wishes to come, you need to have patience, have a large heart and compassion because not all will play along your line,” he said.
He added that reconciliation required tolerance, noting that people should not be expected to think or behave in exactly the same way.
“So, if I’m not forgiving, we will not put Ganduje forward; the situation is the same with Yusuf,” Kwankwaso said.
He further maintained that his political endorsements and candidacies were not influenced by financial considerations, saying, “We don’t ask for a dime from each of them to get our endorsement and tickets; we don’t sell our candidature.”
