LASEMA REMOVES CONTAINER TRUCK OBSTRUCTION FROM LAGOS ROAD

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency has removed a truck carrying two 20-foot containers that tilted and blocked about 80 per cent of the roadway at National-Ashade, Lagos.

The incident occurred around 11:21pm on Sunday when the MACK truck reportedly developed a fault while attempting to make a U-turn.

In a statement issued on Monday by its Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, LASEMA said its Eagle Response Team stationed at Cappa was activated following a report of the incident and promptly arrived at the scene.

The agency said preliminary findings indicated that a tyre burst caused the truck to tilt, creating a significant danger to road users and obstructing most of the roadway.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the incident was caused by a tyre burst which made the truck tilt, posing a serious threat to road users and blocking about eighty percent of the roadway,” LASEMA said.

According to the agency, its responders immediately secured the area and implemented traffic diversion measures to prevent a secondary incident while awaiting the arrival of heavy-duty recovery equipment.

LASEMA said the recovery operation was carried out through a coordinated effort involving a private crane, two forklifts and the agency’s lowbed.

The two containers were successfully recovered and placed on the agency’s lowbed, while the MACK truck was towed to the LASTMA yard in Oshodi with the assistance of a private tow truck.

The agency confirmed that the affected section of the road had been completely cleared and reopened to traffic.

“No loss of life or injury was recorded in both incidents,” the statement added.

Oke-Osanyintolu commended the agency’s Cobra and Eagle Response Teams, as well as other collaborating agencies, for their prompt intervention.

He urged operators of articulated and heavy-duty vehicles to ensure their vehicles were properly maintained, adhere to speed limits and traffic regulations, and exercise caution while driving on Lagos roads.

The permanent secretary also encouraged members of the public to promptly report emergencies through the 767 and 112 toll-free emergency lines.
