Argentina captain Lionel Messi made his first appearance for Inter Miami since the death of his father, Jorge Messi, on Wednesday night.
Jorge Messi, who was 68, passed away after battling an illness.
Messi was introduced as a substitute in Inter Miami’s Leagues Cup clash against Club León, receiving a loud ovation from the fans at the stadium.
However, the 38-year-old could not inspire his side to victory as Inter Miami suffered a 3-2 defeat.
The result saw Miami eliminated from the Leagues Cup knockout stages after a win over Atlético San Luis and an earlier defeat to CF Monterrey.
Inter Miami reached the final of last year’s competition and won the inaugural Leagues Cup in 2023.
